Sandra Orchard: 'No Time to Wave Goodbye' & Giveaway

3/4/2012

This week we welcome Sandra Orchard to Author Memories.

Picture
Sandra Orchard lives in rural Ontario, Canada where inspiration abounds for her romantic suspense novels set in the fictional Niagara town she's created as their backdrop.

Married with three grown children, when not writing, she enjoys hanging out with family, brainstorming new stories with fellow writers, and walking her dog in God's beautiful creation.

She loves to connect with readers, and has created some “novel extras” to enhance readers’ experience of her books.

No Time To Wave Goodbye
by Sandra Orchard

Both of my parents were born in England shortly before the outbreak of WWII. They immigrated with their families to Canada in the 1950s and met some years later. What a scary prospect it must have been to leave behind all that they’d known to come to a country where they knew no one. Yet, my parents never talked about it. My dad didn’t want us to worry that we might face the same kind of horrors.

You see my mom was evacuated from London during the war. Torn from her home, she and some of her brothers and sisters were loaded onto trains and shipped to the country. In the last months before my mom died, I asked her to tell me about that time.

She said that they’d stayed at one place where the adults were very nice. It sounded like a children’s home by the number of children who were there. Her most vivid memory (one she had trotted out a few times when I was a child and asked for more water in the bathtub) was of sharing the same two inches of bath water with all the children, one after another. She also remembered standing on a cliff, looking over the landscape when the wind picked her up. If her sister hadn’t grabbed her in time, my mom was certain she’d have blown away.

The second home she was placed in wasn’t as pleasant. Five children shared the same bed, alternating head to toe. My mom was five and scared of the family’s dog. They had no indoor plumbing so going to the bathroom in the middle of the night was an ordeal. More than once she had an accident, which infuriated the mother of the house. When Mom’s parents traveled down from London to visit and heard what was going on, they took my mom home with them and wouldn’t let the authorities send her away again.
Picture
My grandmother is pushing the wheelchair, my great-grandmother is in the wheelchair, and my mom is sitting on her lap. The picture is taken in London England (note the double decker bus in the background).
My mom shared that story with me when my daughter was struggling with nighttime accidents. Mom emphasized how important it was to not make a big deal about it. I so wish she’d been around for many more years to teach me such nuggets of wisdom, but cancer stole her from us not many months later.

After her death, I read the book No Time to Wave Goodbye by Ben Wicks about children evacuated from London during the war, so named because oftentimes the children were shuffled out of the city so quickly that there was no time for goodbyes.

Reading the book, I felt as if I’d stepped into my mother’s past and was seeing her life from a whole new perspective. What a gift parents give their children when they share their family history.

That's an amazing story to hear. I'm so glad her parents took her out of that bad situation. The only story I've heard from my family is that my great grandpa took my grandma's maiden name in order to escape from Russia during the war.

Oh, that's interesting. Did they get fake passports in that name, do you know?

Jennifer Tipton
3/4/2012 05:18:50 pm

My mom said the name was Wiecheki, which was my Grandma's maiden name. His real name is written down somewhere and my mom is going to look for it. These are my great grandparents that I'm talking about. I don't know if they obtained fake passports or legitimate ones? I'll have to call her back and ask. I need to ask her if she know what year her grandparents came over to America?

I always find this so heartbreaking that parents had to be separated from their children during such a terrible time. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is one of my favorite books, but it always makes me think about what the real children of that time must have gone through.

Sandra Orchard link
3/4/2012 02:48:13 pm

The book about the evacuations was very interesting because it showed that for some children, leaving the streets of London for the countryside was a wonderful experience. My father was sent to boarding school and even after the war, continued on there. I know that was very common in Britain, but I couldn't imagine voluntarily sending my kids away like that! (Okay...there were days. -grin- )

Thanks so much for sharing about your folks. My parents were both born in Russia and immigrated to Canada after WWI. As we grew older, we heard some stories of what they went through before and after they achieved freedom.
Looking forward to reading 'Shades of Truth' as I have just finished enjoying 'Deep Cover' a second time!!

My husband's grandfather came from England, then to Canada, and then later after marrying with children to the US. When I think of these people coming to the "Melting Pot" for a better life and learning our language, taking tests for citizenship, and then now people coming into the country illegal and receiving benefits, it is very hard to swallow. Thanks for sharing tales of the past that prove to help us realize how God has truly blessed us. The future? It's all in HIS Hands, isn't it? Would love a copy of your new book.

Sandra Orchard
3/5/2012 02:22:29 am

So true, Nary. And I wouldn't want our future to be anywhere else. I'm curious why your grandfather didn't stay in Canada. :)

Thank you for the glimpse into you family's history. The children who were evacuated from London faced many trials. They have a special place in my heart.

Sandra Orchard
3/5/2012 02:26:24 am

Is your family from England, too?

Shirley
3/6/2012 02:33:39 pm

My family came to the eastern coast of what is now the United States in the 1600's and 1700's. Long before the children of London were evacuated. Their stories just touch a soft place in my heart. Let's face it not all the children landed in C.S. Lewis type situations.

Reminds me of Reba MacIntrye on Who Do You Think You Are? last Friday. She found out her 7th great grandfather sent her 6th great grandfather to America as an indentured servant in order to hopefully give him a better change in life - but her 6th great grandfather was only 9 YEARS OLD. Your book sounds like a great read.

Sandra Orchard
3/5/2012 08:16:08 am

Oh, wow, they put them to work very young in those days. The book I read mentioned that many evacuees were put to work on the farms, too.

Missy Tippens
3/5/2012 02:07:55 pm

What an amazing story, Sandra. I've always heard of that time in history but never have heard personal stories about the kids it happened to. Thanks for sharing. And for the great photo.

Hi Sandra, I asked my mom about the passports and she wasn't sure. Jenny

Sandra Orchard
3/6/2012 02:22:07 pm

It'd be interesting to imagine how they might have snuck out of the country without passports. Or how he would have obtained one in his wife's name, perhaps used her father's? Gets my writing brain chumming :)

Jennifer Tipton
3/6/2012 11:24:10 pm

My mom's not sure what year they came over. She's looking for the information. If she finds anything out, I'll let you know.

I have no personal stories of WWII, but I have a friend who was separated from her family when Berlin was divided. A good piece of bread is like a dessert to her, as there was a shortage of bread.

I enjoy reading about WWII, to learn of the experiences of others. I cannot imagine what your mother went through as a child. War definitely has many more casualties than we think.

Hi Sandra, I'm so glad you shared this story with us. I can't imagine shipping my boys off. This past weekend my dad showed up slips of paper his parents had for milk and things. They weren't food stamps, but food, milk, gas etc was rationed and they could only buy so much.
Great post!

There are so many stories from WWII that we'll never know. Our parents and grandparents didn't want to talk about it. They truly were a generation set apart.

Sandra Orchard
3/9/2012 05:45:48 am

Yes, isn't that interesting that you've seen the same. Yet, my husband's family who lived in Holland during the war freely recount many inspiring stories of people who took in Jewish babies as their own to save them, and of the Germans rounding up their young men to serve in the German army.

Ginny Jaques link
3/9/2012 07:37:21 am

It's amazing what our parents went through. My mother was in China when Pearl Harbor was bombed and was interned by the Japanese there for two years. Her story was better than some others, but still a lot of angst involved in the separation.

Sandra Orchard
3/11/2012 06:56:46 am

Was she a missionary? It's sad to think how many today in war torn parts of this world face similar loss and separation.

I too have lost my grandparents and parents. I was lucky to have been told some stories over the years before their deaths, and I have been richly blessed in that I have been given many pictures and mementos of years past from my family heritage. Old letters, pictures and postcards, etc. which I will treasure forever. One of my favorites is my grandparents' marriage certficate, while moth eaten and torn, reminds me of their devotion to each other through many, many years. thanks for sharing your story with us, Sandra.
