My Dear Noah, -
                                Well another Sunday is
here, and say it is a much different
day that last Sunday. it is just a
beautiful day. the sun is so nice and
warm. Friday was a dredful day
rained, hailed & snowed of course
the snow didnt stay on at all. but
lately it just seems to rain every
other day. We were all back in the
bush this forenoon, looking for some
beech nuts. but we didnt get a one.
We had a good walk anyway.

Harold Winch is home. came on
Friday morning. The West certainly
seemed to agree with him. It was
quite a surprize to his people when he
walked in. Adele was telling me last
night up at choir practice about Harold
being at your place. said he had a fine
time.
I was down to New market yesterday. I
saw your Uncle Frank Terry there too.
I am thinking of going down in a
couple of weeks to stay over Sunday.
Well Noah you said you thot I must
have found some one else that had changed
my mind. But I don't think there is any
one else living for me. Perhaps there is for
you though. I guess you have often heard
the song. (I love you only". and for me the
"you" is to be emphasised for I am sure
your the only one in my eyes. So now
the rest lies with you. Oh Noah, if you
were only here.

We are going up to S.S. and Mary Smith is
coming home with us to practice. she &
Sadie are going Duet to-night. - "Nearer
Still Nearer: They'll do-it won't they.
Della Mahoney is away on a couple of
weeks visit. and Stanley & Mae drove
down to Markham Fair Friday & hav'nt
returned yet. I guess they must be
getting married "eh:  Norm Yorke is to
Married a week from Wednesday. so I hear
Mr Stacey, a student, is to be at Belhaven
to-night.
Say! what is it you, get your lectrises over
you might tell me and then maby I
could sympathise with you. unless it
is some thing awfully bad. and I know
its not so bad as that. I tell you I caught
it on Saturday. i met Gertie Glover and
she flew into my wool. She didnt know
any thing about you and me until that day. she
said she was told after she got to New market.

Well "Evergreen Farm" was certainly
alive yesterday. Mr Wm King had Ladies
Aid. Did your place have your place
named when you were here.
I am awfully glad your grain is turning
out as well as you think it is.
Noah hustle up your work and send
me a letter saying you are coming
East (Such & Such a time) and there'll
be one happy girl, if ever there was one.
You speak of getting lone some, but really
I simple don't hardly know what I am
doing some times. I got your letter last
night, it seems like a long time from
the time I get one until the next one
comes. There's never one comes before I
am ready for it. The girls are hustling
me up to get ready for Sunday School.
I am neare a close for this time anyway.
So bye-bye with all love & xxxxx

Genealogy Notes

Genealogy Note #1 - Mary Smith

Ethel has mentioned Mary Smith several times during the course of these letters, including the time that Mary was visiting Huntsville during Ethel's holiday there. So who was Mary Smith other than a school friend and neighbor?

Once again I used the Search pattern that I used last week (and other weeks) as well as below when I searched for Gertie Glover, and that began by searching for Mary Smith of Belhaven, York County with a date of 1911 because that was the current year, as well as a census year.  By the time I finished my search, I had discovered:

Step 1: Results: Mary Elizabeth Smith, b 4 Jul 1885 in Belhaven, York County, Ontario. That put Mary at 26 yrs old during 1911.

Step 2: Mary's marriage record for 27 Dec 1916 to Malcolm McDonald.
Results:  Mary's Parents: William Henry Smith and Sarah Diana Wass. This rang a memory bell because we have a Rebecca Wass in the Family Tree.

Step 3: Marriage record for William H Smith and Sarah D Wass
Results: Sarah's parents: Noah Wass and Mary Ann Marshal
Realized that Noah and Mary Ann were also the parents of Rebecca Wass, which meant Sarah and Rebecca were sisters, but I hadn't filled out the tree that far.

Rebecca Wass was married to Thomas Barker  who was the father of Harry Barker - a familiar name to me because Harry was married to Ethel's Aunt Maggie Glover who I recently posted a photo of with her house.

Final Result: Since Mary Smith was the daughter of Sarah Wass and William Smith, that made her official relationship "1st cousin of husband of aunt".   That's such a mouthful, forgive me if, in future, I simply refer to Mary as Ethel's cousin.

Genealogy Note #2 - Gertie Glover

Since I didn't have a Gertie Glover in the family tree yet, I used the search engine of  the Ancestry.ca site to search for a Gertrude Glover and found these facts:

Step 1: Search for Birth Record for Gertrude Glover
Results:  Elizabeth Gertrude Glover born 25 Jan 1887, East Gwillimbury, York, Ontario. Parents William Daniel Glover and Maryette Willson
Note: Gertie is 24 yrs old in this letter

Step 2: Search for Marriage Record for William D Glover and Maryette Willson
Results:  Marriage Record of Oct 2, 1883 in Pickering, Ontario for:
Groom: William Daniel Glover, 28,  Bachelor, Farmer, residing in Ravenshoe, York County
Groom's Parents: William Glover and Mary Ann Bunce
Bride: Maryetta Wilson, 26, Spinster, residing in Pickering Twp, Ontario County
Bride's Parents:  Seth C. Willson and Mary Ann Ernest
Witnesses: *Thomas J. Glover of Ravenshoe, and Susan Willson of Pickering

*Although Thomas J. Glover is not in our family tree, we do have 2 x Thomas Glover's.

Step 3: Search for for William Glover and Mary Bunce
Results: Marriage Record of 20 Feb 1837, Home District (York Co)
Groom: William Glover of East Gwillimbury
Bride: Mary Bunce of East Gwillimbury
No parents names given on this marriage record
Witnesses: William Miller and John Bunce
Married by Publication of Banns, Home District Record Vol #10 1831-1840

Step 4: Search Census Records for actual location and names of offspring for William Glover and Mary Bunce
Results: 1871 Canada Census for East Gwillimbury:
Father: William Glover born 1813, England, Primitive Methodist, Married Farmer
Mother: Mary A. Glover born 1819, England, Prmitive Methodist, Married
Child #1 - Charlotte b 1850 - age 21
Child #2 - William D b 1855 - age 16
Child #3 - Thomas Joseph b 1859 - age 12
Child #4 - Albert James b 1864 - age 7

Results confirm that Thomas Joseph is William Daniel's brother so I have the right William and Mary A Glover, and the right location since all our Glovers live in East Gwillimbury area.

Step 5:  Search for William Glover, b 1813 in England and Thomas Glover, b 1811 in Yorkshire, England to discover if they are brothers.
Results: I didn't find anything conclusive on the ancestry.ca or .com or  .uk sites, but I was successful on familysearch.org (a free site) which found records for:
- Thomas Glover, Christened 1 Jan 1811 at Loftus, York, England, Father: Thomas,
          Index Project (Batch) Nbr:  C10551-1
- William Glover, Christened 5 Apr 1813 at Loftus, York, England, Father: Thomas and                Mother: Mary,  Index Project (Batch) Nbr:  C10551-2

Since Thomas Glover is Ethel Nelson's great grandfather, if William is his brother, then Gertie Glover would be Ethel's ***third cousin.  Phew.

***Update on Gertie Glover (eff Dec 28, 2013):

After receiving confirmation from another Glover descendent (through my contact page here) that William and Thomas were indeed Glover siblings, I've filled in the Draper Family Tree on ancestry.ca and they have deduced that:
Gertie Glover is Ethel's second cousin 1x removed.

Genealogy Notes

Here's a run-down on Ethel's Pa and his brothers in case you're getting confused:

Parents:
John Nelson b 1808 England married Mary Ann Green b 1810 England on 26 May 1829 in Upwell, Norfork, England.

John and Mary Ann emigrated with their 6 children to the US after the 1841 UK census and they are shown as a family living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the 1850 US census.

Here's the info I have on their children:
1850 - Frances (b 1832) last seen on the 1850 US census
1850 - William H (b 1834)  on the US census, but several William H Nelsons in Ont
1850 - Jemima  (b 1831) marries James Lucas and stays in Wisconsin
1857 - Henry (b 1835) marries Eliza Crouch in Ontario (Ethel's grandparents)
1861 - James (b 1829) appears as Married on the 1861 Canada census in Ontario
1861 - Emanuel (b1833) appears as Single on the 1861 Canada census in Ontario, but marries in 1865 in York County

To go one step further using the above:

- Henry moved to Iowa leaving several children including James Henry Nelson behind in Belhaven (post about Eliza's letter from 2 wks ago)
- James has a son, James A who married Lillian Blizzard
- Emanuel is Uncle Emanuel who lives near Belhaven and is very sick

To sum up, we know that 3 for sure of John and Mary Ann's children ended up in Ontario - 4 if you include William H because there are several William H's in York and Simcoe Counties at that time. Jemima stayed in the US and we have info on her children, grandchildren, etc.  And Frances just disappeared.

I hope that clears up the ancestry of Ethel's paternal side for you.

1911 Courtship: Apr 16 Dear Noah

Look what I found in a collection of prairie images called Prairie Postcards in the Peel Library virtual collection at the University of Alberta holdings....
Picture
Victoria Avenue (looking West), Regina, Sask, after 1910, Prairie Postcards PC002741, Published by Lewis Rice, Moose Jaw, Sask,
I wanted you to see it is because this is how it looked back in Noah and Ethel's courtship year of 1911. Noah has probably travelled this road dozens of times since it's one of the main east-west throughfares in Regina, and Grand Coulee is due west of Regina. For all I know, Noah could even be one of the two men driving in the vehicle.  Isn't that a thought!

Of course, it looks a lot different now as it's one of the busiest roads in Regina, being commerical buildings to the east of Albert St and residential to the west. I'll see if I can find this exact spot my next trip in an take a photo so we can see what a difference 100 yrs makes.

Genealogical Notes
- Stewart Trueman Draper: In the Genealogical notes of Apr 11 Dear Ethel we first learned of Noah's cousin, Stewart Trueman Draper living in Indian Head, Sask with a map included. Stewart has one of those names that no one seems quite sure how to spell, including the man himself:
1876 Birth Record - Steward Trueman Draper
1881, 1891, 1901 Canada Census - Stewart
1902 Marriage Certificate to Bertha Charlotte Hamilton - Stuart
1916 Canada Census - Stewart
1937 & 1941 Border Crossing Cards into the United States - Stewart

As his cousin, Noah refers to him as Stewart, whereas Ethel uses his birth name. Since Stewart seems to be his own preference, that's how I shall refer to him from now on.

- Martha Brooks: since neither Martha, nor her finance, are part of our family tree, I haven't taken time to research at her this time. However, it will be interesting to see what plays out. Will love win out, or will parental pressure?

- hustle: I honestly thought this was a modern term, probably because of the connection with the Disco era of the 80's. It sounds out of place for Ethel to be using it in a 1911 conversation. Very interesting.
- Galloping Consumption: An infectious disease which is caused by the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis, was known as consumtion, or TB for short. Although there are several forms, Pulmonary tuberculosis is the most common form where a patch of inflammation develops in the lung, with formation of an abscess. This often heals spontaneously, leaving only scar tissue. However, when the disease spreads rapidly through both lungs, it was often referred to as ‘galloping consumption’. Another form is miliary tuberculosis where the disease is spread throughout the body via the bloodstream. Tuberculous meningitis is when the disease enters the membranes surrounding the brain.

Back in 1911, the vaccine (discovered in 1920) and the drugs to combat the disease (released in 1940's) weren't known yet, and people with TB walked, shopped and lived among the rest of the general population. No one knew it was spread by air-borne particles similar to the common cold.

Today, even with vaccines and drugs readily available, millions of people around the world contract TB every year. Once in decline, the disease is making a comeback:
The increase has been most marked in deprived inner city areas, particularly in the USA, and here there is a clear link between TB and HIV, the virus which causes AIDS. TB is the main cause of death in HIV positive individuals.

Cast of the TV Show, The Waltons.

I remember watching the TV show, The Walton's, which aired from 1971-81 and was set in the years of the 1930's and 40's. Do you? Many people don't remember what happened to Olivia Walton when she disappeared from the show, but for some reason, that's one of the subplots I remember most. During that 7th season, Michael Learned, the actor who played Olivia Walton, wanted to go on to other projects yet the character she played wouldn't just leave her kids. Because her persona was so ingrained in the show, they didn't want to replace her, either.  Having Oliva die would have set the show in a dark direction where they'd all be dealing with the after-effects instead of being a loving, family that put smiles on our faces as well as tears every week.

The writers and producers of The Waltons solved this by showing Livvy as getting sick. As she coughed more, we began seeing a spot of blood here and there on her hanky. Finally, the episode came where she left for a sanitorium in Arizona to heal from the consumption, or TB that was slowly killing her. The theory was that a dry climate would enable easier breathing and heal the lungs. Many people did return after spending years in a sanitorium, and that's exactly what Livvy did in The Waltons when she made occasional guest appearances both on the tv show and in the special made-for-tv movies afterward.
Tuberculosis in Popular Culture is a very interesting Wikipedia site that shows how TB has been portrayed in books, songs, operas, film, art, and even videogames. Although The Waltons TV show isn't mentioned, here is a small sampling of what you can find:
- In Anne of the Island, the third book of the Anne of Green Gables series, Ruby  Gillis, one of Anne's childhood friends, dies of "the galloping consumption."

- Mimì, the heroine of Puccini's opera, La bohème has tuberculosis.

- Jimmie Rodgers (1897 - 1933), country music singer, sang about the woes of his
tuberculosis in the song "T.B. Blues" (co-written with Raymond E. Hall) which he  recorded on January 31, 1931, at San Antonio, Texas. He also recorded Whippin’ That Old T.B. in 1932, but ultimately died of the disease days after a New York City recording session.

- In the Samurai Shodown series of videogames, Ukyo Tachibana is depicted to be at times coughing out blood, which is a symptom of tuberculosis. In order to heal himself of his illness, he sought the Ultimate Flower. However, out of gratitude, he
presented it instead to his confidant Kei Odagiri. He later found another way to  cure his illness, but he instead gave it to his final lover, Saki (when Kei married another man), and died of the illness.
That's it for this week. Let me know if you want any more research done on anyone or anything you read here.

Vintage Dolls, Vintage Recipe

When my father went away to war (WWII), my mother and three older siblings moved in with my widowed, maternal grandmother, Lacy Cain.

Picture
Grandmother Lacy Cain at 104 yrs old
I was born soon after that, and Grandmother was an important part of my life from that moment until she died at 104. Everyone in the family says she spoiled me, and I suppose that’s true. But she also set an example of patience and goodness that has stayed with me all these years. Once when someone was rude to her, she gave a gentle reply. Later I asked her why she
didn’t tell that person off. She quoted the Scripture, “A soft answer turneth away wrath.”  (Proverbs 15:1 KJV). While I must admit her answer annoyed me (I was about ten years old, so
maybe that was conviction about my own unruly temper), I have never forgotten her Christ-like attitude.
Picture
Lacy Cain, 20 yrs old, circa 1895
Grandmother was born in 1875, and she was a true Victorian lady, despite modest means. She was an excellent seamstress and made many of my clothes. She also crocheted. When I was about five years old, she crocheted some beautiful doll clothes for me and put them on small display dolls.
Picture
Picture
While the dolls were long ago broken from being played with often, I still display the clothes on new dolls. I also made a shadowbox containing Grandmother’s picture and a few of her belongings. Each time I pass this little display, I think of Grandmother and the way she
chose to live her 104 years of life for Jesus Christ.
Picture
Another enduring legacy my grandmother left is one I passed on to my children and grandchildren. When she was young, a neighbor gave her a recipe for Lepkuchen, German Christmas cookies. These delicious molasses cookies are best made up in late November, then stored to age.

Grandmother Cain’s Lepkuchen (Christmas Cookies)

Picture
Photo credited to The Opulent Opossum (permission pending)
2 quarts of molasses
1/2 to 3/4 lb. of citron or mixed candied fruits
1  1/2 lb. shortening
1 quart to 3 pints chopped nuts (mixed, pine or walnut)
1 ounce nutmeg
1/2 cup cinnamon
3 tablespoons ground cloves
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup soda
2 cups sour milk (or cultured buttermilk)
2 cups hot water
1  1/2 oz. Lemon extract
1 box raisins
10 lbs. of flour (pre-sifted is good)

Make dough up stiff at night.

Next morning, divide into batches.

Roll as thin as possible.

Cut into squares.

Bake in pre-heated 350 degree oven for about 12 minutes.

***Long ripening improves the flavor of these cookies.

If desired, an icing of confectioner’s sugar and water may be spread thinly over

Loosely translated, Lepkuchen means “sweets of happiness.”
Recipe comes from Grandmother Lacy Aris Neal Cain (1875-1979) and was handed down to daughters and subsequent generations. Original recipe comes from Germany by way of Lydia Pregge, or Prague, (not known to be related to Cain family) in Sedalia, Missouri, on November 12, 1922.

Back Cover Blurb

With her father’s death, Anna Newfield loses everything—her home, her inheritance, and her future. Her only piece of good fortune is a job offer from wounded major Edmond Grenville, whose mother requires a companion. The Dowager Lady Greystone is controlling and unwelcoming, but Anna can enjoy Edmond’s company, even if she knows the aristocratic war hero can never return her love.

Even amid the glittering ballrooms of London, nothing glows brighter for Edmond than Anna’s gentle courage. Loving her means going gainst his family’s rigid command. Yet how can he walk away when his heart may have found its true companion?

Grandma Stretched the Meal with Noodles
by Cheryl St. John

Most of my best memories from my childhood are of my grandparents, my grandmother in particular. She was a devout Christian woman who raised six children during the depression, and who never had an unkind word to say about anyone.
Picture
Grandpa and Grandma
Neither Grandma or my mother ever drove. On Saturday mornings, my grandparents used to pick us up. Grandpa gave me $2 a week for shopping, and it was enough to buy Barbie clothes and accessories. My own clothes were all hand-me-downs from my cousin, but my Barbie had new outfits and was always in style.

In the fall, we’d get in the car and drive out into the country, where we’d all get out on a secluded road and pick up walnuts. Back at home, my mom and Grandma cracked walnuts until their fingers were stained dark.

On Saturday evening Grandma washed her hair and my mom set it in pin curls with bobby pins. My grandfather never attended church, but he drove Grandma every Sunday and stopped to pick me up. She sang in the choir and often sang solos in her sweet soprano voice.  Grandma never wore trousers. Even cooking, she wore a dress, with an apron.

Grandma was a great cook, and we had a big dinner every Sunday after church. She made noodles with every meal, even if there were potatoes. Now I realize it was one of the many ways she’d learned to stretch a meal. They had fruit trees, so apple and peach pies were a staple.

Picture
She never threw anything away, even reusing bread wrappers and twist ties. If there was a craft to be made, she tried her hand at it: Sewing, doll making, doll clothing. When the church choir got new robes, she’d always bring several home for the costume wardrobe that sat in the basement. My cousins and I spent hours dressing up and putting on plays with those recycled choir robes.

Once during a snowstorm, I was riding with my grandparents, my grandfather driving, when we hit a patch of ice and the car slid and spun. My grandmother said one word: “Jesus!” The car stopped sliding, and we drove safely home. She lived her life as an example of a person who loved her Lord and her family, and who trusted in the power of that mighty name of Jesus. I’m convinced her prayers for me played a big part in the person I am today.

I have a few beloved items that belonged to her and several recipes in her handwriting, but what most reminds me of her are the small moments, like when I’m spending time with my granddaughter, when I tie on an apron—or when I set a bowl of noodles on the table. I treasure those memories as I treasured her.
