Jessica Nelson: 'Singing in a Silo' & Giveaway

3/11/2012

This week we welcome Jessica Nelson to Author Memories.

Picture
Jessica Nelson, in keeping with her romantic inclinations, married two days after she graduated high school. When Jessica is not chasing her three beautiful, wild little boys around the living room, she can be found staring into space as she plots her next story. Or she might be daydreaming about a raspberry mocha from Starbucks. Or thinking about what kind of chocolate she should have for dinner that night. Whatever she's thinking, one thing is for certain, she is blessed with a wonderful family and a lovely life.

Singing in a Silo
by Jessica Nelson
Singing in a silo is sound and beauty and echoes enveloping you in a heady, swirling rush.

When I was a young girl, maybe ten, my sisters and I visited our grandma in Iowa every summer. Grandma Charlene lived in what felt like the country. Now that I’m an adult I’ve discovered she was but a few miles from the nearest town, but as a child familiar only with the closed-off skies of the south, it felt like Grandma’s farm had been plunked down in the middle of nowhere, on the edge of a dirt road, surrounded by corn fields I couldn’t see across and a sky that never seemed to end.

No neighbors to play with, only sisters on a farm.

During those summers, I remember wild days of doing whatever we wanted. Grandma had stacks of books from her book club lined against the wall: I was in heaven. Big, round metal things served as our horses. To this day I have no clue what they were, but we rode like the wind when we were on them. Then there were the cats. Shy creatures we could never quite catch. Lightning bugs teased us in the night. Those were easier.

And then the silo.
Picture
This looks similar to Grandma’s Iowa silo but I think hers was connected to a barn of some sort and there were less trees, more corn.
A mysterious and smelly place in which we discovered the wonderful treasure of our voices uniting together, like paint strokes, harmonious and free. It was an old one, no longer used, we thought. Pigeons roosted at the top and left their droppings at the bottom, a place we rarely ventured. Instead we poked our heads through the opening and let loose.
We sang hymns like Amazing Grace and On Eagle’s Wings. We sang about going down by the bay and seeing a bear combing his hair. Whatever came to mind, we sang. Alto or soprano, in tune or not, it didn’t matter. In that joyous cadence of melody, we belonged together.

The memory makes me smile.

Three sisters in a silo, young and carefree. Happy.
Picture
(L to R) Josie, Jenni and Jessie on our first day of school. Yes, it was the eighties, hence our stylish jumpsuits.
Those were long ago days and I don’t know if those little girls still exist. I hope  somewhere deep in our hearts, they live on. I’m not sure if that silo still stands, but the farm still still stands and so does Grandma. She visited lately and I couldn’t believe how young she looked.

Maybe Grandma has been singing in the silo too. I wouldn’t be surprised.

Any other socialite would view being packed off to a remote Oregon ranch as a punishment. But Gracelyn Riley knows that this is her opportunity to become a real reporter. If she can make her name through an interview with the elusive hero known as Striker, then she'll never have to depend on anyone ever again.

Rancher Trevor Cruz can't believe his secret identity is being endangered by an overly chatty city girl. But if there's one thing he knows, it's that Gracie's pretty little snooping nose is bound to get her in trouble. So he'll use her determination to find "Striker" to keep an eye on her…and stick close by her side.

It is so AWESOME to see your face and cover on websites and blogs!! Loved your silo story...and the jumpsuits are envious. I had a one piece myself back in the day. :) Congrats on the release, girl! I can't wait to read it!

What a fun story, Jessica. Love the pic of you with your sisters. Reminds me of visiting my own grandparents on the farm with my 2 sisters--no silo, though. That sounds like it was a hoot. Looking forward to reading your book!

This was wonderful to read! My lovely grandchildren, you will never know what joy you would bring to my heart when you came to visit. The silo still stands, but the barn to which it is attached may not last much longer. Our Iowa winds have slowly over the years moved pieces of the barn to the neighbors, parts of Illinois, Ohio maybe....it'a a strong wind. Thank you for the memory in writing, the visits, and your love. Love you all!

Hi Jessica, I have Love on the Range on my wish list and looking forward to reading. I love westerns, add romance, a dash of suspense and I am in heaven. Read the excerpt and it really made me want to keep reading.
Thanks for stopping by to chat and share with us. Cute pic of you and your sisters. We were city folk so no barns or silos but I loved to visit with my grand mothers each summer for 2 weeks. So many great memories.
Thanks for the opportunity to enter giveaway.

Katie, maybe you'll win it. *wink* Thank you for the sweet comment!

Hi Miss Kallie,
Yep, visiting our grandparents was always fun. We had a country grandma and then city grandparents. Both were great. Thank you for your sweet comment! If you win the book or read it another way, I hope you enjoy it. :-)

Jessica, your post brought back so many memories of the summer I spent at my grandmother's farm. Although we visited at other times, that summer was one of the most carefree of my life.

Like Sandra, we didn't have a silo. Instead, we played in an old separator shack. It was a tiny building - probably 4x6 - that was used for separating the milk from the cream. Although I'd been there when Mamma and Pappa had cows, by the time my summer rolled around, the cows were gone, the separator sold, and a playhouse had been born. The perfect size to play 'store'.

Well, that's when we weren't out walking down the railroad tracks, gathering field strawberries, or picking blueberries.

Thanks for taking me back, Jessica. : )

I'm an Iowa farm girl who lived on a farm that had a silo much like that when I was growing up. What fun to read about your memories of the farm and silo. I have great memories of the old farm too. I still live in Iowa but no longer on a farm. When I think back I realize how much I miss it and how much fun I had there. This book looks like one I would love. I wish you much success with it!

Jessica, your new book looks wonderful! I can't wait to read it.

It's great how childhood memories stay with you into adulthood. I still remember fondly staying with my grandmother and having a fantastic time just being together. We didn't do anything really exciting, but her love stays with me even now.

I was right there with you in the silo and on the farm, Jessica.
How wonderful to have memories that many won't ever experience; the excitment and adventure of having relatives who farmed. I feel so
blessed to have grandparents who were from a farming community, although one owned a hardware and the other was a school teacher and editor of the small town paper, we often went to visit other family who had farms. These memories bring much to the table when we share our past adventures....... I enjoyed your blog so much!!

Jessie, I loved this peek into your childhood! I used to go to my grandparents farm, too, and had so much fun playing in the stalled out old tractors, barns, and cotten trailers (I think they were called boll buggies). To this day, I still have a piece of cotten my grandpa harvested and saved for me. What wonderful memories! Thank you for taking me back again. :)

Came to the party late, but loved the memories you shared. I too, had a Grandparents farm visited in summer and winter. My mom was the eldest of eleven, so visits that involved family reunions meant the farm was over-run with cousins. Great memories of driving snowmobiles in a circuit in winter, motorcycles and three-wheelers in the summer. Ah, the memories...

Thanks so much for sharing and your book looks like a wonderful read. Throwing my email in the mix and adding the title to the TBB (to be bought) list.

Thanks again for blessing us with such wonderful memories. How cool that Grandma posted too!!!

Sorry you missed this one, Deb, but always great to read what you're sharing. And you know I have another one posted already although it's just me and not a published author.

And speaking of snowmobiles, hubby let 13 yo old drive around the yard this year for first time. He tried to emulate his dad. Good thing he crashed into the bushes rather than the house or vehicle. Ugh. I'll try to get the video up on my Draper's Acres blog one of these days.
