Music Theme Bandstands on HHH

10/5/2018

Music Stand at Tower Grove Park, St. Louis, Mo., Public Domain
If you are a fan of the arts, and music in particular, then you might like to know about bandstands that have a visual tribute to musicians. Tower Grove Park in Saint Louis, Missouri, is the site of several statues and pavilions, including what is called the music stand, a large Victorian bandstand erected in the 19th century and representative of what you would find in a Victorian walking park. Officially registered on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP), Tower Grove Park Music Stand was built in 1872 and is surrounded by pillars bearing the white marble busts of six famous musical composers.

As you may have guessed, I'm over at the Heroes, Heroines and History blog with images and info about one Canadian and two American music-themed bandstands.

If you drop by and visit my post, Bandstands with a Music Theme, let me know what you think about the currently painted color scheme. Honestly, I think I prefer the original colors above, but then I'm a traditionalist at heart. What about you?

Cheesy Bird Videos

3/21/2018

Cheesy Bird Videos is my post over at the Inkwell today. Just a few brief videos to show our feathered friends doing the same kinds of things that people do...like popping out and scaring others...or being a bully...nothing highly emotional that will take the edge off your day, just a few minutes to clear your mind as you go.

All of the videos are shown at normal speed, and then slow motion so you can see what really happened. Not award worthy. Simply entertaining.

You can see them at

For November 5th, which is my day of the month to blog at www.hhhistory.com, I have a whack of images and photographs from 1874-1955 that show autumn in different views from fashion to food and fun. What do you think of when you hear the word, autumn? Does the sight of multi-coloured leaves make you smell burning leaves or pumpkin pies?

Come on over and share your thoughts as we celebrate the change of seasons by going back in time with Autumn Views.

Meet Me at the Courting House?

I've just returned from my month-long trip to Ontario and one of the treasures I discovered and want to share is the Jackson Point Courting House on Lake Simcoe's Lake Drive in Georgina.

And yes, the Courting House is still there! And on today on the Heroes, Heroines and History blog I'm giving the history of this remarkable structure as well as the efforts to preserve it.

So what do you think... was it worth saving?

Write Canada Result

Novotel North York Hotel, Toronto, June 2015
Last weekend I attended the Write Canada conference where one of my stories, Here We Come A-Wassailing, was up for a Word Guild award.

To my deepest chagrin, I didn't win.

But I enjoyed seeing the satisfaction, disbelief, and tears of those who did, and am sending out another hearty CONGRATULATIONS! to all the winners.

The above photo shows the Novotel Hotel which hosted the conference, but it's what's on the other side of the picket fence that's the subject of my Inkwell post, Travel Gems and World Knit in Public Day.

Note: People who knit and crochet DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS POST!

The post is also the public unveiling of my new image, taken at the conference by award-winning photographer, Stephen Woo.

Murdoch's Shipwreck in Georgina

If you like history, genealogy, cemeteries, old churches, Ontario, and Murdoch Mysteries, then I hope you'll join me over at Inkwell Inspirations where I'm posting about the making of Murdoch's episode, Shipwreck.

My post, Murdoch on Location in Georgina, talks about the historic locations of  Sibbald Point and Sutton where the Shipwreck episode was filmed, and also explores the history of the beautiful stained glass window created by the daughters of  Upper Canada's Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe and his wife, Elizabeth.

I also add in the genealogy aspect showing who in our family tree is buried in the famous cemetery where some of the scenes were shot.

Combining all these elements made the post a joy to write.

I'm sending out a shout-out to the Georgina Pioneer Village & Archives facebook page for the Feb 25th heads' up notice about the Shipwreck episode. Thank you!

Video Wassailing at the Inkwell

So what does the 1949 version of the movie Little Women, the 1963 Christmas with the Chipmunks Vol. 2 album, a vintage video game, waffles, beans, children singing, and Christmas lights all have in common?

I'm featuring them on my post, It's A-Wassailing not A-Waffling today as they all contain a version of the Christmas song, Here We Come A-Wassailing.

I'm a bit worried about the Christmas in the desert one though as I'm sure someone will deem it is in poor taste, and although a small part of me agrees, I've raised four kids, 2 of them boys, and I love hearing them laugh, especially over natural and innocent incidents.

Anyway, if you want to share your thoughts, head on over to Inkwell Inspirations and see for yourself.

Here We Come A-Wassailing is the title of my latest story which is found in A Cup of Christmas Cheer Volume 4 Heartwarming Tales of Christmas Present, Guideposts Books, Oct 2014.   Check out my story page for more info.

Photographs of early 1900 Romance

9/5/2014

The first two decades of the 20th century brought tremendous changes on both sides of the Atlantic. People zipped around in automobiles, airplanes, and motorcycles. The rise of women's skirt lengths threw men's heads in a tizzy along with the matrons of society who wanted to cling to the Victorian age. And along the way, young ladies stepped out with a beau--alone, without a chaperone--leaving parents and guardians sitting on tenterhooks until their daughters returned.

And so begins my post today at CFHS where I'm showing how young ladies enjoyed stepping out with their fellas through early 1900 photographs. The 1890's image below is only one of the activities I've used in my Photographs: Early 1900's Romance post.

Today I start a new adventure over on the Christian Fiction Historical Society blog where you can visit me on the 5th of every month.

As the above photo shows, my post this month is Photographs: Early 1900 Beach Fashions. Come on over and see what people wore a hundred years ago. I bet they'd get a shock to see what some people wear today!
